Overview

In Grade 10, students must take two 2-credit Language Arts courses. One of these courses must be Composition 10. Pathways offers the following choices.

Individualization and adjustments of courses is available. Other Ministry approved courses can be offered. Inquire with specific requests.

Grade 10 English Options

Composition 10 In this course students create coherent, purposeful compositions. Students will be encouraged to develop their abilities through the processes of drafting, reflecting, and revising. Students will read and study compositions by other writers and consider a variety of styles as models for the development of their writing. The course builds students’ writing abilities by introducing them to varied structures, forms, and styles of compositions. Students may complete this course using a variety of tools like the IEW or Sharon Watson writing curriculum. This course can also be completed alongside Socials 10. 2 Credits
Composition 10 Timeline This course is taken concurrently with Socials Studies 10: Timeline. Students will study Canada and the World (1919 to Present) using The Story of Us videos. Essays written in the socials class will be graded and recorded for this class. 2 Credits
Composition 10 Counterpoints This course is taken concurrently with Social Studies 10: Counterpoints. Students will study Canada and the World (1919 to Present) using the text Counterpoints: Exploring Canadian Issues and the DVD series, 'Canada a People's History', along with a variety of primary and secondary sources relating to the events and issues of each decade. 2 Credits
Creative Writing 10 Creative Writing 10 is designed for students who have an interest in creative expression through language. The course provides students opportunities to build their writing skills through the exploration of creative writing in a range of genres. Teachers will support students as they develop their skills through writing and the design processes, inviting them to express themselves creatively and experiment with, reflect on and assess their compositions. Students will explore a variety of different creative forms and writing processes. 2 Credits
Creative Writing 10 Pixar in a Box Students will learn creative writing skills from the artists at Pixar. Students will learn how to create rich characters and story lines that are engaging and meaningful. This course integrates nicely with Media Arts 10 Pixar in a Box. 2 Credits
Literary Studies 10 Progeny Press
Literary Studies 10 is designed for students who are interested in the literature of a particular era, geographical area, or theme, or in the study of literature in general. The course allows students to delve more deeply into literature as they explore specific themes, periods, authors, or areas of the world through literary works in a variety of media. Teachers will guide students in finding their focus and resources to support their learning. Students may complete this course using a variety of tools like the Progeny Press Novel Study curriculum. This course can also be completed in conjunction with Socials 10. 2 Credits

New Media 10 New Media 10 allows students to study English composition from the perspective contemporary technologies such as websites, blogs, and social media. 2 Credits
Spoken Language 10

Spoken Language 10 allows students to study English composition from the perspective of spoken compositions such songs, speeches, and oral history.
